    Fancy a tradeshow ?

    IMATS London 2008

If you want to begin the year being on top in your field or look to network, well, you’re lucky.

For make-up artists, THE place to be is certainly the IMATS, next WE in London.
An incredible trade-show where you can listen and learn from the top make-up artists of the industry, about carrer, technique and much more. You’ve got some classes that are so worthy, and about lots of subjects. FX fans won’t miss the appearances of Rick Baker and Nick Dudman to name a few. HD is on the mind of every make-up artist now, so this year, you’ll find many classes about it, one of them I would greatly recommand is the class from Eve Pearl, a really great make-up artist.
That’s a gorgeous programm, I can assure you. Just take a look at it here.
Of course, you’ll be able to wander around the numerous booth and their products, either classics or quite new. Some come with great bargain offers, like Crown brushes.

If you’re there, please come and say hello, I will be doing demo on Temptu’s booth.

A little advice of mine, come with your portfolio and lots of business card. Those great make-up artists are often kind enough to review your portfolio, which is the most valuable thing you can get for your carreer.

For anyone in the cinema industry, if you’re interested in the numeric side of it, consider going to the IDIFF in Paris. You’ll find lots of informations, the latests products and a great workshop about “light and make-up”. That’s the perfect occasion to check how light and make-up interfere, with the latests HD cameras, like the RED and the F23 from Sony.
Please stop and say “hi!” and ask any questions you have regarding airbrush or the Temptu line.

    French horror tv show

    seanceinterditedec07c.jpg

The last session of the show Séance interdite is about to be on air on Canal+. It’s all about horror films, so you can imagine I have been using a lot of blood again on actors Cybelle Villemagne, Bérénice Marlohe, Julie Farenc & Adrien Saint Jore. As usual, lots of fun to do, and happy to work again with the team and talent Yannick Dahan. The photos are from my phone, not the best quality ever, but…

    Happy new year !

I wish you a marvelous year full of gorgeous projects, a year full of love, of joy, with a good health and some challenges accomplished, or some goals achieved at least…

I don’t know for you, but each january, the old habit of making big resolutions wander around and start to play with my head.

Recently, I’ve read a post talking about the difference between values and goals :
    Here’s the idea :

To succed with a resolution, it should be coherent with your values, with what you really want. Then, it is easy to compare the interest of spending money on a brand new gadget and saving for launching your very own company, or staying on the couch the whole WE when you dream of doing this marathon. You need to remember what matters most, the rest is only useless noise.

Then I ‘ve sat and thought about what I was dreaming of and how I have done with them till now. Well, hmmmm, not that good. Most of what I have written the past years (like a Trek in Nepal, or having some dazzling magazines cover in my book…) are still in the haze, nothing concrete done. They are still dreams.

“You need to remember what matters most, the rest is only useless noise.”
That’s true and simple, though we do not do it often (we all know we should not take another chocolate bar when we are fighting to get in that bikini again for the summer don’t we ?…)

Each day, knowing what is REALLY important help make decisions faster, stressless and better. Think of all that energy you can spare with saying “NO!” to unwanted project/relation/situation, the kind that doesn’t fit in your value grid !

Another thing to take the plunge and succeed once you know what is important : decide what actions you need to do to achieve your goals, so you’ll have a concrete and reasonable plan. Otherwise you will stay in “one day I will …” dream, with a bad that’s-so-huge-I-will-never-handle-this feeling.

So finally, this year, the “big resolutions stoodge” won’t get me. I will just go on, but better. In a nutshell, focusing and improving within my value grid : Caring of my family and boyfriend, living stressless and healthy, growing up as a make-up artist, sharing (knowledge, laughs, tenderness…).
Meaning I will get that blog more regularly, do lots of photo tests, assist a great make-up artist on a great film (well, hmmm finger crossed), go and dance salsa often to be in a better shape, enjoy more time with people I love.

What about you ? Do you have some goals or challenge ? Are you absolutely against that stupid time of decision making that don’t last till the end of winter and just add to your guilty feeling the next 11 months ? Have you ever take the time to think and express your values ? Please let me know.

    Happy holidays

    Happy holidays to you all.
Usually, christmas means family meetings, party, good meals… Sometimes, it’s just some days you feel worse, lonely or sad.

This year, I would like to send some love

    • to those who lost someone they cherish and will miss this Christmas
    • to those who play, laugh and love, even when misfortune seems to strike hard on them.

A few weeks ago, we have done the makeover of the classroom of Necker hospital, famous worldwide for his children care unit.
Nice and moving day, that made me feel useful, seeing how much the children wanted to go to school, keeping what “normal life” is for them, despite the heavy medication, seeing also the loniless of the parents who have to adjust their whole life to the travels to Paris, to get their child taken care of.
Quite impressed also by the hospital crew, working here without forgetting how important a smile, a nice word or a birthday party can be when you’re 5 years old.
These children who keep on playing ball, smiling, making jokes, who can’t wait for their teacher, either in the classroom or in th eir own room when they are not strong enough to go. A lesson for me.

I went home full of energy, yet a little bit ashamed of my little rantings for a rainy day or else.
I am to begin this new year with that memory in my heart, tellin me that even with that rain, even with those production companies paying late, well, it’s gonna be a good day.

So, what about taking the same decision as a gift from you to you and to all people you will meet each day.

If you want to have more information about the association that try to help family whose children got a gastro-enterology problem, you can read (in French, sorry )“la vie par un fil” website.
    Please, do not forget,

There’s no way to happiness, happiness is the way.

    the dalaï Lama.

    Happy holydays again everyone

    Blog Action Day

    Saona

    Today is a good day.
Why you could ask. It’s Monday, casual day of work. Well, it’s a good day, because tons of people today will write and read about one issue. A good idea from Blogactionday.org, each year is to speak about a common topic to show how much we all care about it, can think about it and find a way to work upon it. This year, it’s all about environnement.

This morning I woke up take a nice shower, make my tea. No need to go far to get some, just the tap in the kitchen. Lots of people don’t have this freedom and simple pleasure. Drinkable water at hand, as much as they fancy.

But it’s not because it’s simple for us that it is not a kind of luxuary. I had the great joy some years ago to go to the dominican Republic for holydays. It’s a fantastic land, happy people, music everywhere, sun allday. But you can’t drink tap water or you get ill. Then I realize that I was pretty lucky.

So ok. but, why talking about that ? They don’t have drinkable tapwater, why should I be concerned ? Well, the thing is, we all need to be very careful about water. We share it. We live on the same planet, everything we do have a consequence. It’s just a physical law : every action get reaction. Even the tiny one.

Please, we can’t afford anymore to play blind with that problem and say “the government should do something”.
We can do lots of tiny things to help. For ladies and make-up artist for example :

    1. Try to get as little as possible of packaging. Look for any refill form of stuff you use, like soap… and get the empty boxes recycled in the proper bin.
    2. Avoid as much as possible the cleansing pads or wipes, for you face, your babies or your house. Lotion is a sure bet : put on your skin with your hand, do a little masssage and rinse. The Earth and your skin will love it ! For your house, find natural trick to clean without those wipes who just do lots of waste.
    3. Pamper your skin with little products. Your skin won’t be able to digest too many informations or different types of products. Get a good oil or moisturizer and stick to it.
    4. For cleaning your brushes, try to keep the brush cleaner for emergency issue (on set, brushes falling on the floor or between clients). Prefer soap for casual cleaning each evening.
    5. Don’t let the water run while you clean your hands, your hair, your teeth or your brushes.
    6. Love yourself and your natural hair. Coloration is sooooo full of nociv ingredients. Try Henné instead, or some nice oil treatment to simply get them shiny.
    7. Re-use papers you don’t need. I keep a bunch of the old versions of scenarii, timesheet and so on that are out of date or that I do not need anymore and use them for brainstorming, writing down my shopping list etc…
    8. Look for gear that have a reliable battery time, and why not get some solar system to charge your ipod, phone and so on ? Put it on your christmas list.
    9. On set, why not bring your own mug to lessen the waste ? or at least, put your name on your glass, remember where you put it, and keep using it all day.
    10. Have a look out there, enjoy the air, the sun, the wind on your face. Smile. Be happy. Yes people you meet in the street, they deserve a smile too.

Be Earthfriendly and you’ll be able to see you as a Earth hero (well, you can forget about the tights… it’s old-fashioned anyway…)
    Have a nice day !

Festival Off-courts 2007. see you next year !

    p9010329.jpgp9010371.jpg
    Hi, back in London.

For those who don’t know the off courts festival, check my previous posts : Off-courts, Trouville day 1 and the official page of the festival where you will be able to watch at some videos done during the festival through podcast. don’t miss the mini-journal ! it’s worth ! don’t miss the wally hunt on the 8th septembre mini-journal !

I miss the Off courts ambiance, the way of speaking of our nice cousins from Quebec all over the place, foreign filmmakers from Hungary, Austria, Australia… Good creative energy indeed !

The second day, we’ve been working harder to finish the shorts for the very evening. Christian Laurence did a great and funny short giving the tone of the festival. As I have said sooner, Christian is one of the active people behind the kino movement, I really like him, as a kind guy, and a talented and positiv director and team leader. You know what is their motto at kino ? “Do well with nothing, do better with little but do it now!” I think it’s quite good, and some people may say it’s appropriate for even more than kino… ;)
To get more info about the kino, check the story here.

Well, let’s talk about make-up by the way.
I got myself a little workstation in the festival Village, where actors were invited to get made-up before their filming. Too many filmings for my going everywhere, but at least, actors would not be bare in front of the camera.
It was funny because before seeing oneselves on the 4k screen lend by Sony, some of the actors and directors haven’t paid much attention to my offering doing make-up. But the screening made them face the truth : gosh ! HD is cruel !

With HD, skin without make-up is not something quite nice, except for the very very few who has already a flawless and prone-to-be-dry skin. For the most of us, HD get every flaw and redness visible, more than that : obvious. The skin, if not matified properly looks easily greasy, moreover in the nice sun we’ve had those days in Trouville.

Red ears, beard irritation, to name a few, are quite eye-striking. For ladies, well, take care of those foundation who reflect light to get a glooming look. The result will not be as flattering as thought.

It was a pitty I need to get back to Paris on the 3rd day of the festival, it was so much fun and teams were beginning to understand what make-up can do, both for the quality of the image, and as a tool for the story.
Click on this link to discover a great kino I have worked on, to change good-looking Gianni into a lost and down-hill junkie : Chers Parents, a film by Stephane Godron on Gianni’s Myspace.

Thank you all, organisation crew, filmmakers, actors, Sony and Apple… that was great !
    See you next year !
