Festival Off-courts 2007. see you next year !

Hi, back in London.
For those who don’t know the off courts festival, check my previous posts : Off-courts, Trouville day 1 and the official page of the festival where you will be able to watch at some videos done during the festival through podcast. don’t miss the mini-journal ! it’s worth ! don’t miss the wally hunt on the 8th septembre mini-journal !
I miss the Off courts ambiance, the way of speaking of our nice cousins from Quebec all over the place, foreign filmmakers from Hungary, Austria, Australia… Good creative energy indeed !
The second day, we’ve been working harder to finish the shorts for the very evening. Christian Laurence did a great and funny short giving the tone of the festival. As I have said sooner, Christian is one of the active people behind the kino movement, I really like him, as a kind guy, and a talented and positiv director and team leader. You know what is their motto at kino ? “Do well with nothing, do better with little but do it now!” I think it’s quite good, and some people may say it’s appropriate for even more than kino… ![]()
To get more info about the kino, check the story here.
Well, let’s talk about make-up by the way.
I got myself a little workstation in the festival Village, where actors were invited to get made-up before their filming. Too many filmings for my going everywhere, but at least, actors would not be bare in front of the camera.
It was funny because before seeing oneselves on the 4k screen lend by Sony, some of the actors and directors haven’t paid much attention to my offering doing make-up. But the screening made them face the truth : gosh ! HD is cruel !
With HD, skin without make-up is not something quite nice, except for the very very few who has already a flawless and prone-to-be-dry skin. For the most of us, HD get every flaw and redness visible, more than that : obvious. The skin, if not matified properly looks easily greasy, moreover in the nice sun we’ve had those days in Trouville.
Red ears, beard irritation, to name a few, are quite eye-striking. For ladies, well, take care of those foundation who reflect light to get a glooming look. The result will not be as flattering as thought.
It was a pitty I need to get back to Paris on the 3rd day of the festival, it was so much fun and teams were beginning to understand what make-up can do, both for the quality of the image, and as a tool for the story.
Click on this link to discover a great kino I have worked on, to change good-looking Gianni into a lost and down-hill junkie : Chers Parents, a film by Stephane Godron on Gianni’s Myspace.
Thank you all, organisation crew, filmmakers, actors, Sony and Apple… that was great !
See you next year !
Trouville Day 1
![]()
A little hello from Trouville Festival. Yesterday was the first day of the kino workshop. Directors, actors and crew have presented themselves and explain what they were up to, so we can find the perfect match between what was needed and what could be done. It’s quite invigorating to get into that creative mood, everyone trying to help : Directors without project eager to help another in editing or as an actor, a security guard being an additional extra… Do it fast, fine and do it now ! And on top of it, you’ve got everynight a worthy show. And of course, all day long, tons of short-films to be seen in the good theatre of the Festival.
We’ve got a great help from Sony who let the directors use a bunch of HDV cameras, and the films will be seen on a 4k screen… Cool isn’t it ! I’ve been doing some fun make-up, some bruises, some devil and a nice bride… Tomorrow, I’ve been told about a junkie to create… Lots of fun I said, and my new friends, the sounds guys from “au fond à gauche“, who are here to help the different team won’t disagree… Come on, there are still lots of fun to have till next saturday…
Off courts trouville
Tomorrow begins the 2007 edition of Trouville Off-courts festival. it’s a nice, creativ and dynamic festival about short-films. You can even try a kino, it’s a kind of workshop : teams are made to do a short-film in 48hours to be shown immediately within the festival. Everyone in the area is helpful and the word is “Have fun filming and give us fun !” Moreover, Sony is part of the fun this year… that sound good for you all filmmakers at the festival…
This winter i had the pleasure to work on l’astronaute, a short-film by Christian Laurence with great cast and crew. It’s part of the Import-export part of the festival : a director from Quebec is invited to film in Trouville, while a French one is invited to film in Quebec. This year, it’s Christian who has been able to come and shoot, and Chloé Micout, with whom I have often worked, has been filming in Quebec. Their films will be shown for the opening of the festival. I can’t wait to see both and meet the festival team (they really are passionate and friendly) and the cast and crew of the film… sweet memories coming back…

F 23 Camera demo reel
Hi everyone,
after the open days at Sony France, I have been contacted to come and work on the demo reel they wanted for the camera : filming one fair skin guy with a dark skin lady, wearing black and white clothes, in different lights, to see how the camera would handle all these tricky situations that DP have to face regularly. We’ve been filming outside with a big sun, some more clouds, dawn, from big light to big shadow in one nice move… The day after was all indoor, working more in low-key and about contrast. Of course, we shot several times the same things to demonstrate the difference of each hypergamma.
The reel should be seen this autumn in Paris, i guess it will fly to the other Sony branch.
I used Temptu Aqua brand with my airbrush, a very matte foundation. Skin looks very velvety on screen. yummyyyy. We haven’t used any filters on that demo. It was just the talents skin, me and my so-loved airbrush.
Some photos (sorry, not HD quality… just for the fun and memory…)

London Manchester London
It’s been a while since i last wrote on the blog. But for a good reason : I moved to London the 21st July and then leave for Manchester area the day after to be the key make-up artist of an independant film, “A new beginning”, directed by Chee Keong Cheung. I was in a tiny motel in the very little city of Euxton Balshaw Lane for a few weeks, without any internet network, so…
Fun work (lots of injuries, I love that) but hard work because I have to follow the work of another team of make-up artists who did the previous weeks of filming in Hong-Kong. Another place, another way of working.
And I must say : waoooow, northern accent was not that easy to understand at the beginning !
The crew was nice and helpful, the cast quite impressive. We still have a few days to come to finish the filming. I am now in London, happy to find my boxes to tidy and my computer !

Music lovers, this post is for you : i have found a great and simple site to listen to music, discovering new or older gold pieces, and above all, find music that suit your present mood.
You first choose the kind of music you would like to hear, then you can stricten your selection to a style : calm, energic, dark or positiv.
The flow appear on screen, like a mindmap, so you can check what is broadcasted. (one thing i have always regretted with the radio, is that i always miss the name of the artist…)
Musicovery. Please let me know if you liked it. ![]()
New HD Cameras by Sony France

I’ve had the pleasure to come to Sony France offices to admire their new HDcamera : the Cinealta F23. The target is clearly the high quality feature films, and no shame comparing to a film camera. The DOP who were there were pretty much impressed by the F23.
Tiffen was there too, letting the DOP try new filters they have developped to soften the skin when you shoot faces in HD. Without putting a noticeable effect on the overall image, it make the skin looks softier and more mate. Look for the HDTV/FX filters on Tiffen website for more details. I guess these filters will be my best friends for close-up in HD.
The purpose of the Sony event was also to show their new test room. They have build a little studio, nicely put by set decorators, so that DOP can check as many kind of light and effect they can with the camera and check if the camera they want would do the trick for their next project.
I was able to come one day and show the airbrush to the DOP and productions. The interest was there I can say.
Airbrush is making its way now, (at last) in France and you will see it more and more often on set.Very thin make-up, you cannot notice it on talents, especially men. So you get the most natural result possible, even on bad skin. Temptu has developped a special foundation giving a pure matt appearance for indoor filming, so you don’t have to fight all day with skin shining. I’ll show you what it’s like soon I hope on this blog.
I have also the pleasure to meet Mr Bogard, who run a well known company of material renting and a professional make-up shop in Paris. He told me about the fluid make-up from the Visiora brand (i love heir PC compact powder already) used diluted as a great airbrush foundation. I am to have a try… Love to test products ! i will keep you posted about it.
Have a nice WE.
